Is Swine Flu Making You Violent?

Swine Flu Nummies!I will admit that I’ve become a little hyper aware of other peoples’ coughing, sneezing and general germ spreading behavior in the last year. If you are near me on the subway and cough, chances are I will give you a dirty look. I don’t mean it, it’s a visceral reaction. But still, cover your mouth when you cough!

Swine Flu has become the elephant on the subway and it seems that I am not the only one who is nervous.

While reading the Business Insider, I stumbled across a first hand report of a fight that happened on the D train yesterday. A fight fight, not just a dirty look, “what are you staring at” kind of fight. This was a hair pulling, spitting, punching, strangers restraining strangers type fight. The crazy thing is, it all happened over coughing. To justify (although, I can’t say violence in general is justifiable) the woman who was apparently coughing was not covering her mouth. But did she deserve to be punched and verbally assaulted?

I sort of understand the instinct, it’s the same one that causes daggers of hatred to dart from my eyes in the general direction of what sounds like the spreading of germs in tightly packed, confined spaces. But, I would never hit anyone and I’d probably feel bad about my eye-roll later. It seems that the media has done a good job, whether justifiable or not, of scaring the bejebus out of people. But is that a good thing?

In the meantime, to prevent bodily harm to yourself and others, please cover your mouth when you cough. Didn’t we all learn that right around the same time people were really proud of us for pooping?

Has Swine Flu Mania made YOU a bit crazy?
