wtbThere are now two locations for Water Taxi Beach: one in Long Island City and another at South Street Seaport… and another one is set for Governor’s Island which is due to open in two weeks.  I’d never been to either, but figured this weekend it was ’bout time to see what everyone was talking about.  I hit up the Long Island City beach – the original – and I have to say the view is friggin’ amazing!

Really people, the view of the New York City skyline is what this place is all about.  That and feeling the sand between your toes, which is a rare occurrence for us city dwellers.

The rest of the experience I could take or leave.  I got there early, way early, like 7PM to meet up with some friends for a dinner of crappy hot dogs and pulled pork.  Let’s just say this is not a fine dining establishment, I felt a bit sick post beach-meat experience, but I guess that’s the nature of the beast.  The alcohol is typically overpriced, but they’re generous with the pour, so your drinks will be strong.

Since I got there early, I didn’t have to pay a cover, but the cover charge for this place once the sun goes down varies wildly based on who’s DJing. It seems that it can often cost anywhere from $5-$40, depending.  I’m guessing the night I was there was a $5 night, because the DJ was atrocious!  Seriously, the worst techno I’ve ever heard.  The dance “tent” was cool, but no one really knew how to dance to this stuff.  My friends and I, who are usually all up and gyrating with the best of them, just stood on the sidelines trying to figure out what the F *** was going on.

Besides the ambiance and the magnificent views, the other thing that really made this place was the eclectic group of people. This is really a come one/come all type of place: Hipster, Preppy, Thug-o-rific, Grunge-tastic… everyone’s welcome and it definitely adds to the vibe of this joint.

In conclusion: If you’re looking for a chill night out with awesome skyline views, sand between your toes and a cool mix of people, then Water Taxi Beach is awesome for you.  Beware though…  it can be pricey to get in, the food sucks, the alcohol is ‘spensive and the I could have DJ’d better in the third grade.

That’s my opinion and I’m sticking to it.
