Brooklyn International Film Festival

If you missed Tribeca, no worries, I see more film festival opportunities in your future.  I’m psychic like that.

Tonight is opening night of the Brooklyn International Film Festival which runs through June 14th and will be showcasing 120+ films from all over the world.

I spoke with festival director Marco Ursino, who told me when the festival started twelve years ago it was just an experiment with some friends, but having been among the first international festivals to reach New York, they quickly realized they were filling a void.  In twelve years the festival has grown tremendously, his team received almost 2800 films this year all of which went through an extensive screen process before they could make it to the big screen.

Think of all the money they saved on Netflix!

Ursino emphasized the festivals mission to nurture the careers of young film makers, reserving spots every year for newcomers with limited film experience. Of course, he says that all the films in the festival are special, but when asked what his favorite was, Marco admitted it was a local Coney Island film Sea Legs that has won him over. Followed closely by a “disgusting” horror movie Pig Hunt.

Tickets run $10 each or you can go the packaged rate for 4 tickets for $25 or unlimited festival access for $100.  I’ll be hitting up a few films this week and reporting back to you here on NOW, but in the meantime, take the train to Brooklyn Heights and check out some movies that don’t have Ben Affleck in them.  Come on, it’s raining… what else are you doing?

The Brooklyn International Film Festival runs June 5-14 at Brooklyn Heights Cinemas, 70 Henry Street, Brooklyn.
